Ethan started talking when he was 2, but Gavin remained silent. When Gavin turned 5 years old, Alisha and Eric had their suspicions confirmed. Gavin was diagnosed with autism, a developmental disorder that affects the neurological development of social and communication skills. <image:title>The Lady Caps</image:title>
<image:caption>Needham B. Broughton High School, home of the Capitals, is a 4A school located in the heart of Raleigh, N.C. Last year the women’s basketball team, the Lady Caps, made it the fourth round of the state playoffs, where they lost to their main rival, Millbrook High School. The Lady Caps entered this season with a determination to go all the way. With a Cap Eight conference record of 13-1, the Lady Caps seemed to be on track. Yet, the story of the Lady Caps isn’t one simply based on numbers and statistics. Instead, their story is one of determination, passion, and friendship.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Lady Caps</image:title>
<image:caption>“It’s always like this,” said Jessica Willets. “We are pumped when we get on the bus, but it quiets down as everyone starts to focus.” Junior Josie Rouse jokes with fellow junior Lizzie Mann, while senior Dejah Cheatham listens to music to clear her mind.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Lady Caps</image:title>
<image:caption>While playing their archrival Millbrook High School in one of the last regular season games, tensions are high. The Lady Caps already beat Millbrook at Broughton earlier in the season. Senior Dreamer Crawford is determined to also win at Millbrook.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Junior point guard Kaila Ealey (14) has proved to be a vital part of the Lady Cap’s success. But in the last 10 seconds of overtime, Millbrook pulled ahead by one point to win the game 61-60.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Lady Caps</image:title>

<image:caption>Wednesday: Dawn Dudley kisses her daughter Trinity Dudley, 5, during a swim lesson at the YMCA at Meadowmont in Chapel Hill on Wednesday, July 23, 2014. At age 2 and a half, Trinity was diagnosed with autism which led Dudley to found My Circle of Girls, a social & service group for girls ages 2 to 6 living with autism in the Triangle area. The group offers monthly programming that allows the girls and parents to learn and interact. In July, My Circle of Girls partnered with the YMCA at Meadowmont and their "We Build People" campaign to offer discounted swim lessons for young girls with autism. According to the National Autism Association, accidental drowning accounted for 91 percent of deaths of children with autism spectrum disorders in 2011. "We may have future Olympic swimmers in the group," Dudley said. "But our main goal is teach our girls how to be safe around water."</image:caption>

Alden Phelps, 6, tries to catch tadpoles in the Eno River during the 35th annual Festival for the Eno in Durham, N.C., Friday, July 4, 2014. Festival goers had the opportunity to play in the Eno River as well as listen to musical groups and browse crafts created by local artists. The event is presented by the Eno River Association, which is committed to the preservation of the nature, culture, and history of the Eno River basin.</image:caption>

I snapped this photo near the end of the second half when it was clear Germany was going to win. Two days later I received an email from an angry subscriber asking why the N&O would publish a photo that exemplifies such disrespect to the flag. Even as an avid Girls Stater, I respectfully disagree. I'm proud of this photo and think it demonstrates this woman's pride in her country that she was willing to sit in 90-degree heat to watch her team. Food for thought.</image:caption>

BioNetwork scientist Summer Cortinas, who showed young visitors different elements of kitchen chemistry, including crystals, candy dyes, and polymers. Chelsea was celebrating her birthday at the museum and wore a princess dress and crown. As a product of an all-girls high school education, I love seeing young girls engaged in science and math. So often, the stereotype is that girls that are interested in math and science can't be girly. That's just not true.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wednesday: One of my biggest goals of the summer is to improve my portrait skills. As a photojournalist, the idea of posing someone and being in complete control of the situation is foreign. As photojournalists, we adapt and react to situations, never controlling them. Yet in portraits, we have to control; we have to pose. I loved meeting Robyn Johnston and practicing my portrait skills with her and her mosaics. <image:title>Blog - Week 1: Beginnings</image:title>
<image:caption>Day 1: First day on the job. I was instructed to wear business casual. What I quickly learned was that business casual for photographers is very different than business casual for reporters. Within a few hours of arriving at the N&O, I was sent to help cover a tractor demonstration. I think I've finally gotten all the dirt out of my Tory Burch flats. Lesson #1: Be prepared for anything!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Day 3: Road trip! I went with staff photographer Ethan Hyman to northeastern NC to document some of North Carolina's best-kept secrets. We traveled to Livermon Park and Mini-Zoo in Windsor, N.C., where they have buffalo, peacocks, goats, and llamas. (Photo Credit: Ethan Hyman)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Also on Day 4: This was incredibly special to me. I had the opportunity to take portraits of M.H. Green, a WWII veteran who was off the coast of Normandy when his ship was blown apart by mines on D-Day. My grandfather was in those same waters 70 years ago, so it was an honor for me to meet and spend time with Mr. Green.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Day 5: This sweet boy sustained brain damage at birth and has severe developmental delays. He has a sweet and powerful connection with his therapist, who works with him five days a week. After working on several autism stories, covering this story was very emotional and special to me. These children with autism and other developmental problems are some of the sweetest people I have ever met. I am always so lucky to meet them and have the opportunity to help share their stories.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Everything was fine. He was right on cue with everything. He even had some words,” said Vicki Gurganus. “But then at about 18 months, he stopped paying attention when we said his name.” Her son, Zackary “Zack” Gurganus, now 16, was diagnosed with autism at 22 months. Autism is a developmental disorder that is usually diagnosed within the first five years of a child’s life. It affects the neurological development of social and communication skills, but it is still unknown whether the autism is caused by genetics or early childhood environment. Regardless of its cause, autism is life changing. While waiting for the Special Olympics Spring Games to begin, Zack clings to his father, Kevin Gurganus.</image:caption>

We don’t know why,” Vicki said. “We have shed tears trying to analyze what triggers him. But we simply don’t know.” Zack gets frustrated while working with his occupational therapist.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Right now we financially have help through Medicaid, which is such a blessing. We are able to have speech and OT here at our home, and we are able to have these wonderful workers who work with him,” said Vicki. “We don’t want Zack to ever be without the help he needs. We can do without pleasures for us in order to provide for him, but we couldn’t survive without his workers and therapists.” Michelle works with Zack on Tuesdays and Thursdays and usually takes him out into the community in order to expose him to new situations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I still believe that he will one day talk. I believe that the Lord will give him the words one day to talk. He may not be able to sit and have a conversation like us, and that’s OK,” Vicki said. “But I have faith in God that one day he will say words, that he will speak. I haven’t given up. He’s sixteen and I haven’t given up.” Zack practices writing his name and phone number in case he ever gets lost.</image:caption>

And he would fight us. But we got past that,” said Vicki. “I’ve learned just to give him love, and that’s all he wants, lots of love.” Zack gently touches Vicki's face as she leans him to kiss him.</image:caption>

We are blessed with autism, the greatest challenge of our lives.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Alisha and Eric suspected something was very wrong with one of their sons. “But the picture was clouded by the fact that he was such a preemie,” said Alisha. “We didn’t know what ‘normal’ delays were for him.” Twins Gavin and Ethan were born 12 weeks early. Ethan started talking when he was 2, but Gavin remained silent. When Gavin turned 5 years old, Alisha and Eric had their suspicions confirmed. Gavin was diagnosed with autism, a developmental disorder that affects the neurological development of social and communication skills. Gavin plays at the playground near his home in Durham, N.C.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Needham B. Broughton High School, home of the Capitals, is a 4A school located in the heart of Raleigh, N.C. Last year the women’s basketball team, the Lady Caps, made it to the fourth round of the state playoffs, where they lost to their main rival, Millbrook High School. The Lady Caps entered this season with a determination to go all the way. With a Cap Eight conference record of 13-1, the Lady Caps seemed to be on track. Yet, the story of the Lady Caps isn’t one simply based on numbers and statistics. Instead, their story is one of determination, passion, and friendship. Teammates and friends, Kaila Ealey and Mariah Wall dance before the start of a game.</image:caption>
